ONLINE CHURCH ON THE CHEAP

Phone ONLY

Zoom Meeting Room (expensive)

Zoom Meeting Room (expensive)

When no gear or budget exists

Facetime / Skype / VideoConferencing / WhatsApp / Signal

Not workable for large groups, but can work with small home groups, limited in bandwidth, quality is terrible, great for personal connection, however very limited.

Google Hangouts

Great for small groups, secure, but not easy to share and there’s a learning curve.

Direct Streaming to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram

Requires multiple devices for multiple streams, easy to start streaming, tough to manage - requires moderators. Quality is poor.

WHEN YOU HAVE SMALL BUDGET

Zoom Conferencing

Great for small groups, secure, but not easy to share and there’s a learning curve. Not scaleable + expensive (Zoom).

IDEAS FOR Streaming Organized by Ministry:

Small Groups + Individual Prayer + Counseling:

Facetime / Skype / Zoom / Google Hangouts

Message + Worship + Group Prayer:

Direct Stream to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram

*** Keep in mind that Instagram doesn’t save your stream automatically, while YouTube and Facebook do.

COMMUNITY ISN’T ONE SIDED

#STAYATHOME LiveStream

For Pastors, Worship Leaders, Kids and Youth who want live community online.

There is a dynamic shift happening in the church, the era of one-way conversations are ending. This can be a two way conversation, not just a one-way presentation of the gospel, and for many this is the community they need.

Camera
PRE-EDIT TO PREMIERE Workflow

Option 1 - Cheapest, slowest and most difficult

Camera:
Use Existing Equipment

Computer(s):
One if they are capturing and editing and uploading (when Pastor is proficient), two if someone else is editing.
Dropbox is also required and a fast internet connection.

Internet:
Fast uploads and downloads at each computer

Workflow:
- Record a clip
- Upload to Dropbox (if separate editor), edit, export (expect a hour per 30 minutes of work)
- Deliver to Facebook/YouTube using Premiere (less engagement) (expect a hour upload per 15 minutes of footage)

Online Interaction:
- People can comment, and page can comment to them, but it’s a one sided conversation.

Total Time, not including content prep = 2-6 hours depending on complexity per content. Not sustainable.

Camera to LIVE

Cheap, but complex

Option 2: Cheap, Fast, DIFFICULT

Camera: Use Existing Equipment
Computer(s): One fast computer for streaming, fast internet for streaming
Equipment Required: El Gato Capture Card $180 (link) or Black Magic Mini Recorder

Workflow:
- Turn on Computer, El Gato Software (verify it works) or BlackMagic Media Express, Launch OBS, Connect Camera via HDMI
- Setup YouTube / Facebook LIVE Online Interaction
- Go Live

Online Interaction:
- Allows there to be a two way conversation.
- Speaker can interact with comments in real time
- Volunteer moderator needs to sift out any bad comments

Total Time, not including content prep = 10 minutes setup + length of recording

Camera to LIVE

EASIEST, but PRICY

Option 3: EXPENSIVE, Fast, EASIEST

Camera: Use Existing Equipment
Computer(s): Any computer to click “Go Live”, fast internet for streaming
Extras: Teradek Streaming Box $1200 (link)

Workflow:
- Turn on Computer, camera, mics / lapels
- Setup YouTube / Facebook LIVE stream
- Press record button above camera

Online Interaction:
- Speaker can interact with comments in real time
- Volunteer moderator needs to sift out any bad comments

Total Time, not including content prep = 10 minutes setup + length of recording

POTENTIAL LIABILITIES

Music Licensing

CCLI works at a church campus, but not off campus 👎

CCS works with streaming off campus ✅

Leverage sites like Music Bed (use this link to get a free month) for cheap Non-Profit subscriptions and unlimited licensing for streaming. Please read license terms first before committing - this is critical.

Angry Aggressive Comments

Moderators take on several church roles, they are the greeters, the ushers, the prayer team and also the security team and are required during all live and non-live videos. They need to be added to your Facebook Page, YouTube or other

HOW TO TAKE YOUR MINISTRY LIVE

LIVE MINISTRY PROMO IDEAS

Strategy IS ALL ABOUT CREATING NEW CONTENT ON A CONSISTENT SCHEDULE

What is critical is to set specific times where families can expect to see new content. Each ministry should be treated like a TV show, it’s always at 3PM. This should be included in your Sunday stream. Forgive the rushed thumbnails, I’m just trying to get info out, not make it pretty for church staff :)

MAIN SERVICE

This is a pre-edited service, but there are a couple

Currently, I’m working on ways for Churches to take their BlackMagic ATEM Switchers or other HDMI switchers home so they can still do live style church. So hop from Pastor at his home, to worship, to prayer, etc

For the youth ministry, it’s all about meeting students where they are at. In this church Instagram was one of those places, however SnapChat, TikTok, and Zoom may be those places. What is important is to understand each platform’s limitations.

This was a particular passion project for me as many parents are already experiencing not having schooling, so they need a time (which we settled on 3PM on weekdays for a kids ministry LIVE show.)

One key thing is when you are putting together curriculum, aim to pull in the families who are a part of the ministry into the video, it will make them feel special, like they are a part of community. Ask families for recorded videos like this:

• Kids and parents reading scripture
• Kids and parents acting out a part of a story

You’re looking to integrate the family, not just produce a one-sided show.

For main services, we’ve already pre-recorded a message for the beginning for various weeks, however it’s critical for the church to understand that “pre-recordings” are only going to solve the short term. If the US continues down this path, we are looking at at least 6-8 weeks of this as Italy is still locked down as of week 5.

SOCIAL AND MESSAGES ARE THE NEW BULLETINS

It’s critical that the church know what you are doing in clear steps. Keeping social alive and using text messages to quickly get your entire congregation up to date is critical. This is the new bulletin. Stories, Posts, Messages, Etc. It all matters, and keeping your teams informed matters.

STRATEGIC IDEAS FOR EACH MINISTRY

CREATE
COMMUNITY

MAIN SERVICE

While most churches have probably prepared 4 weeks of services, these will seem callous to those who go to the church. You’ll lose relevancy by not engaging in social. There won’t be a vaccine for a year, so this is long haul, so prepare for that.

One key breakthrough we are developing is a way to have churches to take their BlackMagic ATEM / HDMI Switchers or other switchers home so they can go between various teams using online techniques. Cutting from Worship Leader, to Pastor, to special video, etc.

YOUTH MINISTRY

For the youth ministry, it’s all about meeting students where they are at. In this church Instagram was one of those places, however SnapChat, TikTok, and Zoom may be those places. What is important is to understand each platform’s limitations.

KIDS MINISTRIES

Engage Families and Children with live, relevant teaching to them and fun activities.

WORKFLOW + GEAR

WORKFLOW

This layout is to remind you what you need to accomplish the setup.

Goal:

Create a system that can be used in your facility, or even in homes.

Camera:

Can use an existing HDMI camera, DSLR, Mirrorless or Fixed Lens (HD or better required), if you have no camera, here are some great options

Low Budget:

Camera: Sony A6000 - https://amzn.to/2Uel6Oz

AUDIO

  • Lapel Mic per person (for multiple people, an audio mixer will be required) - Rechargable Batteries for active sessions, wired lapels for sit down interviews.

HDMI Capture

So price gouging on Amazon is in effect, so I’m trying to highlight options, but if you have these at home or have access to an electronics store, try to get it there.

WHY LIVESTREAM // Background

Written by Jonathan Cape, updated March 20, 2020

My story, well, really why God made me do a 180 degree turn, from business to church.

To give context before we begin, my wife and I run a company called Le Cape and we have since 2011, but in the winter of 2019 God began to stop our work from coming in. We are used to having a steady stream of income and this abrupt stop made no sense, nothing had changed in fact our quality was one of the industry leaders, but we couldn’t get new clients no matter what we did. To top it off, we started experiencing crazy difficulties in our family, our home and our lives. My son had a crazy breathing problem back in September 2019 (so no it wasn’t COVID-19), but we had to rush him to the hospital and he was there for four days, it was one of the scariest moments I’ve had. That following week, our house flooded in the basement, and every time we needed income, we couldn’t book an event (which we were booking in 2020) and instead we’d have to make an insurance claim. It felt like we were not being heard, but God was changing our heart to listen to Him only and not to our own needs. I made a realization that I wanted to be where God wanted us to be, even if it meant suffering, because we got to see miracles in our family and more importantly the scripture came alive like never before. I can’t remember the moments where God’s word felt alive.

So the aftermath of this winter meant that entire months were open on our schedule, and we really wondered what God wanted us to do. Fast forward to Feb 23, when South Korea announced that churches would close, and at that point I started reaching out to my home pastor and other pastors around me. To some they listened, others took it as I was an alarmist, but I persisted as I saw this as the one moment to ask the question, what happens when the church doesn’t have a building? I had watched a Francis Chan video that really changed my perspective on what the church is supposed to be - his message was about the persecuted church in China, that they embraced suffering as well as miracles, and everyone had to preach the gospel. This made me realize that this moment where the COVID-19 virus was basically destroying physical community, that I needed to push as hard as I could to help the church get online in ways that helped create community. I pushed hard for live video, because unlike the former days where you could record a service and people could see the community on the faces of those attended, we were in a new era where the church needed to take over social strategically.

This only compounded when several of my relatives in Italy would describe their situations, and for them, they have been locked down for over 5 weeks as of March 21, 2020. I saw this as not a moment of fear, although I’m sure I came off as an alarmist to many pastors, I now see that the church is the only place that can pivot like this. Major film companies can’t come together to produce content, so it’s up to us to create content.
